Arlington Public Schools offers Saturday elementary math program to help younger students explore math concepts
Super Saturday MathThis month, Arlington Public Schools kicked off the “Super Saturday Math” program for elementary-aged students. The students engaged in hands-on games to explore different math concepts. The program is staffed by Arlington educators and runs on the first Saturday of each month.

“We often hear comments from students such as ‘I'm not good at math’ or ‘Math is too hard for me,’” said Terri Bookey, Arlington Public Schools Director of Early Learning and Categorical Programs. “The goal of Super Saturday Math is to assist students in shifting this thinking to a growth mindset, and help them build confidence in their mathematical abilities.”

The staff engage students in a variety of play-based activities that allow all students to participate and be successful. Many of the games being taught require minimal materials such as playing cards and dice so families can also play at home.

“Super Saturday Math is a fun, exciting event where elementary students get to apply their math skills,” said Kristen Bass, Title/LAP teacher at Eagle Creek Elementary. “The game format provides lots of opportunities to practice math, but to the students, it just feels like play!”

Funding for Super Saturday Math comes from a federal grant through the district’s Title I Program. In Arlington, Title I funding is used to provide additional instructional support to students who are working to meet the grade level standards in math. LAP – or Learning Assistance Program – is a state-funded program that provides instruction for students that is supplemental to the regular education program.

The city of Arlington has partnered with the district by providing the Depot Building at Legion Park at no cost. The next Super Saturday Math program will be held on March 7 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Depot Building at Legion Park on Olympic Avenue in Downtown Arlington.
