Arlington Public Schools’ “Cool Bus” has been on a roll this summer since June 28. Watching students enjoy math and reading is the number one goal for the hardworking staff who spend their time playing different games with the students and handing out books.
Eagle Creek Elementary teacher Kim Deisher-Allen said, “Honestly, I feel like I’m working at Disneyland. They are so excited to come here and get books. It’s amazing.”
Due to the long summer break, students can lose important learning skills. The Cool Bus is an outreach program that provides learning opportunities for nearly 100 students every year during the summer. On any given day, there are dozens of students who engage in fun math games and activities such as building blocks and math manipulatives. Students can also check out books based on their age and grade.
Second grader Odin Ingraham said, “I feel like I’m in school, and I like it.”
Director of categorical programs Karl Olson said, “I give credit to all the people running this. They are amazing and resourceful and so good with these kids. They are just awesome.”
The Cool Bus will continue to visit various Arlington locations on Wednesdays through Aug. 9.
