Eagle Creek Elementary teacher, Katlyn Lorello, has earned her National Board Certification. To become a National Board-Certified Teacher, Ms. Lorello had to go through a process that included: a content knowledge test; a portfolio of student work that shows students’ growth over time; two in-classroom videos and written analysis to demonstrate student interaction skills; and a demonstration of her abilities as an effective and reflective educator. Once an educator becomes certified, it indicates that the educator has met certain benchmarks for the teaching profession.
Ms. Lorello has taught kindergarten at Eagle Creek since 2014. She pursued her National Board Certification to challenge herself.
“Kindergarten is really the foundation of all learning in school,” said Ms. Lorello. “This National Board process really forces you to reflect on your practice. We do a lot of game-based learning in kindergarten, and I meet the students wherever they are in their learning. This process really reinforced why I do what I do and challenged me to think outside the box to meet my students’ needs.”
There are currently 24 National Board-Certified Teachers in Arlington Public Schools.
